A vile beast is dead.More the pity that he escaped justice. The world is a better place without him. Shame on those who helped him to power.
Most countries whether they have right wing or left wing governments are in the middle ground:they have a public sector as well as private and possibly cooperatives which may be employee owneed and insured.Fiscal correction is needed where countries fail in development:Direct taxes have to be lowered to spur capitalist investment;there has to be a minimum wage and welfare to satisfy consumption. If wages are low and there is no welfare products will pile up and the economy will slide into recession or even depression.Britain under heath and Thatcher was in a period of stagnation.Politics is like business:you spend a lot to be elected and make a lot more when you get elected. It is for this reason I donot respect polititions who are to the extreme left;there are kick backs on deals and the politicians pockets are lined. The leftist politician believes in providing its products at a low price while promising high wages. The public sector unit becomes unviable and there is rampant inflation and shortage. The leftist politicians have to increase the price of services and products to generate surpluses.
On the other hand the logic of the left is that there is under development and stagnation, which enables the economy to leap frog directly into the post industrial age of radiation polymers, helium central air condition cheaper than operating fans, non radiation LCD television, mobile phones and Helium air transport, cheper then a seat in a bus.In short the damage done by industrial development like pollution and rapid depletion of the world's resources is reversed.Plastics and methane fuel can be extracted from perma frost in cold regions like Tibet,Siberia,Canada,Alaska and the polar regions resulting in vast new renewable resourses.
It is perhaps for this reasopn God decided to end Pinochets life at this time as technology of the post industrial age has arrived and developed countries face a difficult task of adjusting to the post iondustrial age.Countries like North Korea and Cuba have an easy entry into the post industrial age due to under development.Rest Pinochet.
It is an absolute blasphemy to credit this man with defeating Marxism in Chile: he was the CIA’s 3rd pick to head the coup. As an American whose family had to flee Chile, I am saddened that Pino is still capable of dividing an entire nation-even from the grave. As a trained historian, I foresee that our children will regard Pino as a sorry 3rd world version of the totalitarian oppressors who were responsible for so many deaths during the 20th Century. Like those who still deny the holocaust, history will debunk his supporters. As a believer, I am truly sorry that I sadistically revel the thought that our current warm spell is the result of that man’s soul reaching hell’s depths and igniting with a fury not seen since Hitler himself met his fate.
My Father was tortured in Chile for speaking his mind as a journalist. Therefore he and my pregnant mother had to flee Chile in the dead of night with help from the catholic church. My family and many, many, many families experienced horrific ordeals in this monsters reign. Although many people are glad and celebrating his death, i am saddened by the fact that this horrible human being (if i can call him that) will never meet justice for the terrible crimes he committed.
I do not understand how people can support this man and cry over the fact that he ceases to exist, how can so many people be so blind to the atrocity of 1973 and beyond??
Pinochet deserved to be punished for what he done to Chile, i guess now this lies in God's hands. I hope he burns in the fires of hell for what he has done there is no excuse for taking the lives of and torturing some many people.
VIVA SALVADOR ALLENDE
You know, its funny how the world, Sting, and those dispicable cowards who call themselves the american government, hop on the judicial band wagon when they se it fit to ride. Seems no one wants to acknowledge that Pinochet put Chile where Chile is now!!! What happenned to those people who died, were tortured, and went missing is horrific, but Chile is Chile today because a group of men saw that their country didnt have a chance if things were to stay the way they were. My father was almost killed by the miltary during Pinochet's rule, my mother stood in line for 12 hours to feed her three children , only to be give a loaf of bread and a small chicken for a week. The Socialists, had everything, and the rest nothing, is that fair, is that justice? But no one talks about that. Unfortunatley there is a price to be paid for freedom and democracy, my parents almost paid that price. My cousins grandfathers land was taken, all his property was conficated because he 'owned too much'. When Pinochet took over, he gave them back what was theirs, what they earned, what they worked for all their lives. Think about this.... do you think the socialist parties, and their followers were inocent people who just stood there, protested peacefully, and where ALL taken with no due process, or unjustly? Read what they did during this time..... then form an opinon, they werent inocent bistanders who were just at the wrong place at the wrong time.
'Shame on those who helped him to power'
Yes , shame on Chileans . Pinochet was Chilean , the Military were Chilean , his supporters were Chilean .
Be careful who you blame , you may end up pointing your finger at yourself .
' There is a long record of British support for Pinochet's regime ' Our resident ' historians ' may want to reveal to us how Canada and other countries supported the Pinochet/Chile Regime .
What a great day when people like that pass away. The only shame is that they were not made to suffer as retribution for their war crimes. Where are the parades like we did when Reagan died?
Isn't something that America has such as long history of supporting such vile right wing animals? All in the name of freedom and democracy, what a sad trick.
We are still justifying murder and mayhem in the name of democracy. Look at how some of us still support the terrorist Bush regime and the right wing wackos in Israel.
Roberto, I agree. Nobody likes to think about the fact that, under Allende, Chile was in ruins. Inflation was up 1000%, all the industries had been nationalized, 'tomas' (takeovers of businesses by workers) were frequent, and there were food lines of the kind one used to see in Communist Russia. What's more, Allende was well on his way toward becoming another Castro; he had already dispensed with the Constitution, and people weren't allowed to leave the country. My mother escaped in his time. The fact is, Chile would not be the stable, economically prosperous country it is today had it not been for Pinochet. That 3197 people died is truly terrible--no one will deny that--but 3197 do not a Hitler make. We've lost that many in Iraq already, and, as you point out, the leftists certainly were not pacifists. I hope the historical record will resist this ignorant, reductive tendency to vilify people, and that it will acknowledge (as it seems to do with Castro) both the dismal sides of a totalitarian regime but also the extraordinary things that were accomplished under it.
He was a product of his time and culture. Such is the vile permeation of the left that he is reviled as a monster, while Fidel Castro is lauded. His partisans and those that understand the struggle against the left, mourn a knight in shinning armor, that stopped the red menace from turning Chile into another Cuba. That he was not allowed a state funeral shows the pettiness of the leftist minstrel they call a President.
Most of the people out of Chile, only knows the story told by the socialists and comunists.
They are always acting as the victims of the story and we are so tired about that. There are millions of people in Chile that are greatfull to Pinochet, and will be forever.
In 1973,he took a distroyed country, with lines of people to get some of food, with thousands of ilegal cubans and left people preparing a revolution.
(Fidel Castro spent more than a month in Chile with his friend Allende) It was a disaster. The people in streets asked militars to do something.
He started rebuilding the country , no without problems and armed oppositors.
The 'civil war' did not stop so easy, that´s why people from both sides died.
( the press never tells that, 'both sides')
After 17 years of goverment, and by democratic elections , following the constitution of 1980, aproved by the 70% of chileans, he gave the power in the congress, with a country as one of the best economies in the region, if not the most
It´s that a dictator?
At his funeral, more than 90.000 people went to say goodbye to his urne.People from all social conditions, religions , ages and from all around the country said thanks to this man.
It´s time, now he is dead, that the world knows the other side of the story, the one of millions of chileans greathfull, with the man who saved Chile from a second cuban revolution.
