Chavez names new vice president, ministers

Caracas - One month since his re-election Venezuela's President Hugo Chavez selected a political newcomer as his new vice president and named new ministers to his cabinet.
Losing their posts are Vice President Jose Vicente Rangel, Minister of the Interior and Justice Jesse Chacon and Finance Minister Nelson Merentes, announced Chavez in a telephone call to a talk show on state television Thursday.
Jorge Rodriguez, 41, a psychiatrist and former chief of Venezuela's electoral council, will be named vice president during the January 10 swearing in of Chavez.
Congressmen Pedro Carreno, who has been one of Chavez' right hand men, is to replace Chacon and Rodrigo Cabezas, a leftist legislator and economist, was appointed finance minister, replacing Merentes, who resigned.
President Chavez, who has ruled since 1999, was re-elected December 3 to a 6-year term by a wide margin. The leftist leader will be sworn in on January 10.
