Two dead in attempted Cuban plane hijacking (1st Lead)
May 3, 2007, 18:27 GMT
Havana - At least two Cuban military conscripts who had fled from their unit attempted to hijack a civilian airplane in Havana on Thursday, in an incident that left at least two people dead, airport sources said.
Several armed conscripts, who were apparently trying to flee communist Cuba and ran away from their unit last weekend, managed to get to the runway in a bus in early Thursday.
A shootout with police followed, leaving at least one attacker and one police officer dead, sources told journalists at the airport, adding that everything happened 'very fast.'
The incident has not been officially confirmed by Cuban authorities.
In the afternoon, the situation at the airport was described by workers as 'normal,' although journalists said the national terminal at the airport remained closed and flights had been deferred to a different terminal.
