Argentina-US fans blast Chavez from Copa America stands
Jun 29, 2007, 3:31 GMT
Maracaibo, Venezuela - The spectators gathered to watch the Argentina-US match in the Copa America expressed their criticism loud and clear of President Hugo Chavez of the host, Venezuela.
About the 60th minute of the game, a large number of the 42,000people in the stands Thursday in Maracaibo started to shout, 'RCTV, RCTV!' in reference to the popular, pro-opposition television channel that was forced off the air a month ago after Chavez's government refused to renew its broadcasting licence.
'Freedom, freedom!' followed, and it gave way to the more concrete, 'It's going to fall! It's going to fall. This government is going to fall!'
Shouts persisted for three to four minutes and returned at the end of the game, which Argentina won 4-1.
Left-wing populist Chavez is currently outside the country on a tour that is set to take him to Russia, Belarus and Iran.
