Life in prison for Cuban soldiers who attempted to hijack plane
Sep 19, 2007, 17:06 GMT
Havana - Two Cuban soldiers were condemned to life in prison for an attempted plane hijacking, the opposition Cuban Commission for Human Rights and National Reconciliation said Wednesday.
A court in Havana also condemned three other people, including one civilian, involved in the incident to penalties of 15-30 years in jail.
The soldiers, who apparently wanted to flee from Cuba in the hijacked plane, had previously deserted, the authorities said.
In the early hours of May 3, the two young members of the military killed one person as they attempted to flee their garrison along with a third soldier. They hijacked a passenger bus and entered the airport in Havana, and later killed one of the hostages.
The two soldiers were arrested, following a shootout with security forces.
