Plane with four tonnes of cocaine crashes in Mexico
Sep 24, 2007, 20:57 GMT
Mexico City - An airplane loaded with four tonnes of cocaine crashed Monday in south-east Mexico's Yucatan peninsula, civil protection authorities said.
The accident happened for unknown causes at around 11 am (1600 GMT), in a jungle area in the state of Yucatan, some 30 kilometres from the state capital Merica, civil protection officials said.
The authorities said the plane - originally fitted to transport 24 passengers but adapted to carry drugs instead - had flown in from Colombia, and added that they found no one on board when they arrived at the site. Nothing was known of the pilot.
