Rio de Janeiro - At least eight people died Sunday when a small plane crashed in a residential neighbourhood of Sao Paulo.
Four single family homes were completely destroyed by the crash and the cause of the accident in the northern part of the financial capital remained unclear, authorities told local media.
The deceased included two small children and four adults on the ground and the craft's two pilots. A 30-year-old woman and an 11- year-old girl were also severely injured and had been brought to the hospital. At least one baby remained missing.
Rescue efforts were underway Sunday afternoon.
Reports said the airplane was a Learjet 35A owned by Reali Taxi Aereo and was on its way from the Campo de Marte airport north of Sao Paulo to Rio de Janeiro. The accident occurred shortly after takeoff.
