Twin-engine plane crashes into 6 houses in Brazil
Nov 23, 2007, 16:36 GMT
Rio de Janeiro - A twin-engine airplane with four people on board crashed Friday over six houses in the Brazilian Amazonian city of Manaus, but no one was killed.
The public organization that manages Brazilian airports, Infraero, said that despite the seriousness of the accident there were no serious injuries either among the plane's passengers or the residents of the affected houses.
The EMB-810C aircraft, built by Brazilian company Embraer and belonging to the air taxi company Lafir, took off from Manaus airport for an airplane club belonging to the same firm.
Lafir chief executive Pedro Teixeira and his secretary were on the plane, along with the pilot and co-pilot.
Teixeira said he suspected that malfunctions in the landing gear and in one of the plane's engines led to the accident.
Civil Defence officials said the crash damaged five precarious homes in the favela (slum) Comunidade Uniao and totally destroyed another, which was empty at the time.
