Explosion in gold mine in Ecuador leaves 1 dead, hurts 35
Nov 27, 2007, 22:04 GMT
Quito - An explosion in a gold mine in Ecuador killed one person and injured 35, fire department officials said Tuesday in the town of Machala.
Earlier media reports had claimed a death toll as high as seven with up to 60 missing. Local authorities said that there are no workers trapped inside the mine tunnels or otherwise missing.
The explosives depot at the Liga de Oro mine blew up Monday, destroying a camp where some 250 miners worked.
The mine is some 400 kilometres south of Quito.
A short circuit was regarded as a possible cause of the explosion. Mishandling of explosives or even sabotage were not immediately ruled out.
The injured were described as having relatively minor wounds, though management of the private mine did not allow the military to enter the premises.
