Rio de Janeiro - A five-year-old girl was killed and six people were seriously injured when an earthquake registering 5.0 on the Richter scale rocked the south-eastern Brazilian town of Itacarambi, local media reported Sunday.
Six houses were destroyed and 60 damaged, the reports said. The epicentre of the quake, which struck just after midnight local time, was ten kilometres underground near Caraiba in the north of Minas Gerais state, Brasilia University's Seismological Institute said.
