Chavez announces measures to combat food scarcity in Venezuela

Jan 21, 2008, 18:29 GMT

Caracas - Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez has announced measures to combat food scarcity and warned that companies and land owners found hording foodstuffs would be dispossessed.

Hoarding and smuggling food was 'treason' which the military would combat, Chavez said Sunday evening on national television. Both the security forces and the people would have to remain on the alert 'so that our food is not smuggled to Colombia.'

Reports on Monday said the secret police (DISIP) had searched food storerooms in the south-western state of Tachir.

Many farming families on the border with Colombia are doing very good business through smuggling, the opposition newspaper El Universal reported Monday.

Chavez has admitted that food is scarce in Venezuela and said the the government is partially to blame. The president introduced price controls on basic foodstuffs which has led to scarcities in supermarkets. The price of dairy products has gone up by around 50 per cent.

The president said the opposition might take advantage of food scarcity to attempt a new coup, but he vowed to stay in power until February 2013.

Anyone attempting a coup would be dealt with determinedly: 'Try it and see if you manage it.'

In April 2002, a coup against Chavez failed after just 48 hours.

the more hugo tries to control prices the less there is. hmmmmm...i shall pull out my chrystall ball.....farms are taken over by the goverment, people are forced to work on collective for the betterment of people. and of course line ups for basic food stuff will be the thing of the day. from a multitude of choice foods to resorting to the basics of milk bread and beans. I guess he will introduce the population to the wonders of black and white television and the one channel full of praise for the wonder Hugo and the equality he brings everyone....yep equal in poverty for all.

Meanwhile Chavez ids offering cheap oil to the poorest parts of american population .His use of natural resources is much more ethical than stuffing the bank accounts of a few corporate tycoons;he trades oil with cuba for medical aid .All the income from the oil is used to improve living standards and;health care and education for the poorest parts of the population .Of course the White House will labal that communism. To be taken as a compliment in this case .By the way the oil is sold on the world market too, isn't that free trade ?What exactly would SP4 mean with free trade ?Something else.Who knows but he certainly is not going to explain that ,he only knows hollow slogans.

RE:'Meanwhile Chavez ids offering cheap oil to the poorest parts of american population .'

Yes, we did notice and CITGO stations are closing all over the country anyway. He lost an enormous amount of revenue because of that.

His use of natural resources is much more ethical than stuffing the bank accounts of a few corporate tycoons'

Oh, really? Do you REALLY think so?

RE:';he trades oil with cuba for medical aid.'

And the Cuban doctors and nurses have been defecting to the US as quickly as they can sneak onto an airplane or even leave Venezuela on foot.

RE:'All the income from the oil is used to improve living standards and;health care and education for the poorest parts of the population.'

You forgot about all the arms deals, Tonny. He spent a lot of money on arms and threw tons of money in the laps of leftist politicians around the world.

RE:'Of course the White House will label that communism. To be taken as a compliment in this case.'

I do not recall the Dear Hugo ever being referred to as a 'communist', but it would make sense if he had. He has bought into the same unworkable ideas concocted by a couple of brain-dead ne'er-do-wells in Europe that Lenin fell for. Those ideas have failed everywhere tried, including Venezuela today. They have failed despite the enormous revenue stream available to the Hugo Monster.

RE:'By the way the oil is sold on the world market too, isn't that free trade ?'

Tonny, I'm shocked that you would fall for this silly Gooper myth. There is no such thing as free trade in the world today. We do NOT live under Capitalism, but Mercantilism. There is a huge difference. You, of course, very carefully ignore that difference because it doesn't fit into your world view.
