I really doubt that this is depleted uranium. What evidence
exists to show that this is DU. I like the fact that the reporter
did ask Pike of the Federation of American Scientists, the first
anti-nuclear peace group, but there should be further digging.
What form is this uranium in? The articles do not say, only that
it is DU. DU just does exist because it is a byproduct from
uranium enrichment and as such is found in the form of DUHexafluropide
a material that must be kept in sealed containers because it is
extremely toxic, not so much because of the uranium, but because
it forms a highly toxic acid, Hydrofluoric.
Pure DU metal would be reasonably useless to the FARC. They can
not make a bomb out of it and they don't have the forging and
machining capability to make kinetic energy penetrators out of it.
What then could they use it for?
I expect that this uranium is in some uranium ore form, perhaps
yellowcake, uranium oxide.
I eagerly await more information before this spins out of control.
