Mexico City - More than 11,700 Mexican children and teenagers tried to cross the US border alone and were sent back to their native country in the first seven months of this year, Mexican migration officials said Wednesday.
The figure was released as Mexican officials signed two agreements with the UN Children's Fund (Unicef) to protect migrant children.
The country is a transit area for hundreds of thousands of Central Americans trying to get to the United States every year. According to Mexico's National Migration Institute, 2,503 unaccompanied foreign children and teenagers were intercepted from January to July in Mexican territory.
In 2007, the United States repatriated 17,553 Mexican minors who crossed the common border unaccompanied, as well as a further 17,993 who did so with their relatives, the Mexican Interior Ministry said.
