Venezuela's parliament okays referendum on unlimited Chavez terms
Jan 15, 2009, 11:50 GMT
Caracas - Venezuela's parliament has paved the way for a planned referendum on changes to the constitution that would allow President Hugo Chavez unlimited terms of office.
The National Assembly on Wednesday night approved in a second and final reading the referendum for a constitutional amendment that would allow not only Chavez, but all of Venezuela's governors, members of parliament and mayors to seek re-election over an unlimited period.
The national electoral council was due on Friday to set the date for the new referendum, which had been planned for February 15.
Under the present constitution, Chavez's second term ends in February 2013 without the chance of re-election.

zimbabwe sounds more like it. chavez idealism is already hurting his country.
One way or another Chavez and those in power will stay in charge indefinitely and there is nothing the people will be able to do about it. Sometimes your last democratic vote is your last democratic vote.
In other words, you have freely voted to enslave yourselves.
if his 'glorious revolution' is so great why doesn't he have a willing follower to take his place? Is there no one else that could carry on the cause? Even Putin in Russia found a way to keep it going without a referendum and his ideology can be a little shady. That says a lot about Chavez and the fact that he knows he'll go under if he has to be replaced. and with oil prices dropping so low taking away his wealth it could happen soon enough anyway.
