Canada's Liberals throw support to Harper - with conditions
Jan 29, 2009, 15:10 GMT
Montreal - Canada's Liberals showed a change of heart Wednesday that avoids another governance crisis as they threw their support behind Conservative Prime Minister Stephen Harper's budget and economic stimulus plan.
The change of heart came as Parliament reconvened this week after a recess that was forced by Harper in December over a budget stalemate.
To sweeten the deal, Harper has added a 40-billion-dollar economic stimulus package for Canada's slumping economy. His refusal to add such a measure in December provoked formation of a centre-left coalition led by the Liberal Party that threatened a vote of no- confidence.
Opposition leader Michael Ignatieff demanded certain conditions for his support, giving notice that Harper's government was on probation and would have to deliver timely updates on the results of the economic stimulus package.
As of late Wednesday, there had been no response from the Conservatives.

this budget stinks big time. 80 billion plus deficit....damn idiot politicians.
they cut the GST by 2 percent? for what reason, i curtanly didnt feel the effects of it, but the goverment lost 12 billion plus a year from its loss.
now they have to make for the loss with deficit spending.
goverment doesnt like simple solutions, they like to ensure the paperwork between them and the public and the money they spend takes up most of money earmarked for the perpose it was ment for.
hmmmm....lets see.
raise the GST back up to 10 percent.
raise basic deduction up to 32000(this means the first 32000 you earn is income tax free, goverment doesnt lose any revenue but my check is bigger)
make all housing rental income tax free(this will make everyone so greedy they will be building rental units like it was going out of style, they did have a tax credit which had the same effect, but they took that away)
any surplus pay down the dept sprinkled with some infastructure spending...and when the recesion ends, we...as canadians will come out of the gate refreshed and ready to go with no extra dept to weight us down.
