Chavez gets green light for unlimited re-election (Roundup)

EPA/Prensa Miraflores / HANDOUT

Caracas - Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez Sunday clinched his long-sought right to stand for an unlimited number of terms in office, as more than 54 per cent of Venezuelan voters backed a constitutional change.

Chavez's current term is set to end in 2013.

'Unless God disposes otherwise, unless the people dispose otherwise, this soldier is already a pre-candidate to hold the presidency of the republic 2013-2019,' Chavez told supporters after the results were made official.

'Now, the best is yet to come!' he claimed.'

The proposal for a constitutional referendum to allow the unlimited re-election of the president passed with 54.4 per cent of the votes against 45.6 per cent, according to the first official report issued late Sunday by the country's electoral authorities.

The opposition acknowledged its defeat, although its leaders stressed an 'unequal campaigning against a 'Goliath-like' rival and denounced an abuse of state power to favour Chavez.

Student leader David Smolansky told reporters that the fight to take power away from Chavez is 'not a 100-metre race, but a marathon.'

As she announced the results, National Electoral Council president Tibisay Lucena called upon the winners to behave 'with dignity, with pride, with calm and above all with generosity' in their celebrations in a deeply divided country. Over 94 per cent of the ballots had been counted.

Within minutes Chavez, accompanied by his daughters and grandchildren and wearing his trademark red shirt, appeared before thousands of supporters. From a balcony of the government palace in Caracas, he sang the national anthem as fireworks were set off around the city to celebrate what he called 'a truly historic victory.'

'Chavez will not leave!' his followers chanted in a classic slogan.

Chavez, who celebrated the 10th anniversary of his rise to power earlier this month, said 'the truth has won over lies.'

'Perseverance has won,' he said.

In December 2007, Chavez narrowly lost his first referendum effort to get such a proposal passed. Unlike then, the current proposal put forward the unlimited re-election not just of the president but also of governors and other elected officials.

He had comments for the losing camp, and included them among those who are set to benefit from the constitutional reform.

'It is a victory for Venezuela, and they are part of Venezuela!' Chavez said.

'I hope everyone recognizes with dignity the victory of the people,' he said.

The controversial Venezuelan president read out a message of congratulations from his mentor and friend, historic Cuban leader Fidel Castro.

'This victory is also yours, Fidel,' Chavez said.

He refuted the fears of many who have criticized what they termed Chavez's efforts to perpetuate himself in power.

'Nobody can make himself perpetual. It is God that is perpetual, and the homeland must be perpetual,' he shouted. 'The Venezuelan homeland is either socialist or will never be perpetual.'

Close to 17 million voters were registered to vote Sunday.

No major incidents were reported on election day and the referendum was followed by many international observers, according to Venezuelan electoral authorities. However, the opposition denounced the use of state funds to favour the pro-government camp.

After a landslide election victory in 1999, Chavez - who led a failed military coup in 1992 - has ridden a wave of popularity, particularly among Venezuela's poor. He quickly pushed the adoption of a new constitution and was inaugurated for the first of two terms in 2001.

Chavez survived a coup that actually ousted him from power for a few hours in 2002, as well as a crippling two-month oil strike in 2002-03 that forced the oil-rich country to import petrol.

He also faced up to a recall referendum in 2004, which he overwhelmingly won.

In 2007, he was inaugurated for his second six-year term.

This is really a non-issue.

It is amazing how many 'typical U.S. citizens' think this is anti-democratic, or fanatically socialistic, without even realizing that for most of the history of the United States there was no term limit for the president.

sure its democratic....but when democracy is used to limit freedoms(ie homeland security and anti drug laws) under the guise of protecting its citizens...it becomes less democratic. chavez shows that he will start to strip the country of democratic means when things start to fail within the country, he will of course blame outside sources for his misery.

The comments above just show you how the typical U.S. citizen is biting at the bit to kick some more ass. Iraq and Afghanistan are getting old, it's almost as if the wars are just the status quo normal day living. The U.S. has to go out and find some fresh meat to pick a bone with.

The U.S. is full of bloodletting maniacs that make any excuse to mass kill and then the apply the method of 'willful ignorance' to deny what they do.

tonny, It is hard to get a fix on what the 'typical U.S. citizen' is like. However, here are the numbers I have been able to estimate:

- 60 million of them belong to an organization that is proven to mass rape children (catholics of course).

- 150 million of them believe the Earth is less than 10,000 years old.

- 100 million of them would vote for Bush (again!!).

- 200 million of them are ready to kick some more butt if only they can find a good made up excuse.

- Over 200 million of them know virtually nothing about their own government and know even less about art, literature, science, technology, history and any other such subject of importance.

- The majority of U.S. citizens want to win the lotto and be as rich as Britany Spears, even if they have to be ravished by a duo in front of a camcorder to get rich.

Of course, they use 'willful ignorance' and deny the above, but it is true nonetheless.

Basically, the U.S. consists of neophytes who elect other neophytes and about less than one percent of the U.S. contains the 'brain trust' and ingenuity that the U.S. is famous for and made the U.S. what it is today.

The U.S. is very much like SP4. He is a good archetype of the 'typical U.S. citizen'

to deal with Lance's Messianic Complex.
1) admit he is THE ONE, and kiss his arse.
2) nail him to a dead tree.

The latter has more benefits than the former.

'2) nail him to a dead tree.'

They did that to jesus too.

I am here to tell you once again:

- Mass killing is mass killing.

- Mass baby killing is mass baby killing.

- Mass debt is mass debt.

- Mass willful ignorance is mass willful ignorance.

Who camps on this site, Hollow be thy name. Thy carrot patch over runneth with parasites. Give us our daily veggies. Forgive us our sins(being meat eaters) as we forgive you for being a nutter.

The moron is totally gone in the head. He equates himself to Jesus.
Excuse me, I have to go find some nails.

Used the word 'mass' 8 times in his last post. Lance is just a mass of anxieties.
Lance, what makes you think (I should leave it at that)that anyone gives a rat's fur-lined farter about your fixations? Fix them youself. You have gone far past boring. You are now in the realm of SP4: just another mindless web troll.

that lance didn't read or if he did, doesn't understand the gist of this post: 'Lance, the racist says:Feb 17th, 2009 - 20:58:04'

I bet jesus heard that line too.

You guys want to 'crucify' me, but all you can do is rant about how you can't get me to stop writing about what the United States does.

If you are that concerned then I suggest you (the combined U.S.) stop mass killing people and babies and then I can stop writing about it. Sounds sensible to me.

... hopefully catholic priests will stop raping little boys too.

'If you are that concerned then I suggest you (the combined U.S.)'
The poster(me) is not a citizen of the U.S. So his misconceived missive missed the mark, once again. I wonder if the local vegetable will ever clue in. Most likely not. He hasn't got the brainpower. As for what sounds sensible to lunch bucket lance is utter nonsense to to a person who has any cognitive abilities at all.

Lance is wrong again. We don't want to crucify him. We save that for real Messiahs, not fakes like Messiah lance. We just want to nail his arse to a dead tree. As for wanting him to shut up about the U.S., he's wrong again. We just want him to shut the f*ck up period. He's like a broken record. Same track over and over and over, Nothing new, just the same old whine. Boring. But what else is to be expected from a nutter.

'Sounds sensible to me.'
As usual everything is about lance the insensible, who makes no sense whatsoever. What really makes sense is: He shuts up and I call off the hit.

'303 million US citizens couldnt give a rats butt for your point of view.'

I want:

(a) The U.S. to have a balanced budget.

(b) The U.S. to stop mass killing people. It would be nice if they stopped killing a million of their babies a year too.

... you are right: U.S. citizens couldn't give a rats butt for my point of view.

'I want:'
And if you don't get what you want, are you going to roll on the floor, kicking your legs in the air, in a fit of pique?
Are you going to hold your breath until you turn blue in the face? Or are you going to whine until someone shuts you up for good?
Hey Lance's parents: Spank your child and send it to bed without supper. The little b^st^rd needs som discipline.
While he's there he can think about whining about the 1 million people killed world wide in car accidents. He'll find a way to blame that on the 'typical U.S. citizen.'

I bet lance's parents wish they had aborted the sanctimonious little twit when they had the chance.

ahhh...statics....ya got to love em. 1 percent of the population is going to die each year, regardless of what governments do. no matter how much money one spends 1 percent will die. whether they die young or old, when they die they get lumped into statistic of some sort. if your over 70 and die its not of old age its from some sort of illness that gets put into statistic that helps boost the cause of certain organizations so they can keep gouging the average joe blow of moneys.
