Mexico City shuts off water supply to millions

Mexico City - Up to 5 million residents in Mexico City will be completely or partially without water over the weekend, after authorities shut down a main water pipe to preserve the scarce resource.
The capital city's water authority, Conagua, was forced to shut off the supply for two days after the Cutzamala water system hit an historic low amid an ongoing dry spell.
About a fifth of the city's 20 million residents will be hit by the cuts, water authority chief Jose Luis Luege said.
The city had earlier instituted emergency restrictions on drinking water. Over 500 trucks of water were to supply drinking water to the affected areas.
The Cutzamala system west of the capital in Michoacan state normally supplies 30 per cent of the city's water. The rest comes from hundreds of wells and rivers.
