Jun 28, 2009, 2:01 GMT
Mexico City - A shootout that erupted when security forces tried to search a house left 12 suspected drug cartel members dead Saturday in the central Mexican state of Guanajuato, authorities said.
Another dozen cartel suspects were arrested in the raid, in which police said they were fired on while conducting a search.
The people slain and in custody were suspected participants in Los Zetas, part of Mexico's feared Gulf cartel, the daily newspaper El Universal reported.
Police seized a large cache of weapons. Three officers were wounded.
Military forces provided reinforcements to police in the city of San Jose Agua Azul, state prosecutors said.
