Zelaya to return to Honduras with high profile escort
Jun 30, 2009, 15:14 GMT
Tegucigalpa, Honduras - Ousted Honduran President Manuel Zelaya vowed to return to his country Thursday, apparently in the company of several international leaders.
But the government that was installed after his ouster on Sunday insisted he 'needs permission' to go back.
Enrique Ortiz - the foreign minister of the government set up after the weekend coup d'etat - said Tuesday that the new rulers 'respect Zelaya' but that he 'needs permission to enter' the country.
Zelaya said Monday in Managua that he would accept an offer from Jose Miguel Insulza, the secretary-general of the Organization of American States (OAS), to travel with him to Honduras Thursday.
The government of Argentine President Cristina Fernandez de Kirchner confirmed Tuesday in Buenos Aires that she would also accompany Zelaya on his return.
The international community has refused to recognize designated president Roberto Micheletti, the former speaker of Congress.
