OAS suspends Honduras from hemispheric bloc
Jul 5, 2009, 4:20 GMT
Washington - The Organization of American States (OAS) voted to suspend Honduras from the hemispheric bloc late Saturday night as diplomatic efforts failed to overturn a coup that ousted President Manuel Zelaya one week ago.
The resolution immediately suspending the de facto government of Roberto Micheletti was approved unanimously by 33 member nations - with the exception of Honduras, which was barred from voting - during a special session of the OAS general assembly in Washington.
The organization 'will continue to observe the fulfillment of all obligations,' particularly regarding human rights, assembly president and Argentine Foreign Minister Jorge Taiana said.
Zelaya was present for the three-hour special session, along with Argentine President Cristina Fernandez de Kirchner and Uruguayan President Fernando Lugo.
