Interim Honduras government sends mission to Washington (Extra)
Jul 6, 2009, 20:57 GMT
Tegucigalpa - The government set up after the coup that ousted Honduran President Manuel Zelaya on Monday sent a mission to Washington to give its version of events in the troubled Central American country.
The mission was led by former trade union leader Felicito Avila. Former attorney general Leonidas Rosa Bautista was also part of the delegation, along with four others whose names were not immediately made public.
Former Congress speaker Roberto Micheletti, who was designated by Congress to head the new government, has claimed there was no coup in Honduras, but merely a presidential succession.
Zelaya was arrested on June 28 and expelled from the country.
The Organization of American States (OAS) has backed Zelaya and suspended Honduras from membership early Sunday. Micheletti offered to talk to the OAS, but the organization has refused any kind of contact with the government set up after what they regard to be a military coup.
Many countries, including all members of the European Union, have withdrawn their ambassadors from Tegucigalpa and do not recognize the interim government led by Micheletti.
