Earthquake rattles Mexico's north-west (Roundup)
Aug 3, 2009, 20:39 GMT
Mexico City - A series of powerful earthquakes measuring 5.8, 6.9 and 6.4 magnitude rattled Mexico's north-west region Monday, the national earthquake monitoring agency reported.
There were no reports of damage.
Local media reported the centre of the earthquake struck in the middle of the Gulf of California 180 kilometres west of the city of Hermosillo.
The series of quakes shook villages in the thinly-settled region and were noticed along the entire coast of Sonora State, according to the newspaper La Cronica of Hermosillo, which is the capital of the state.
The gulf is the narrow body of water that separates Mexico's Baha peninsula from its mainland, and is also known as the Sea of Cortez.
In the US, the official Pacific Tsunami Warning Center said the quake occurred at 1800 GMT at a depth of 15 kilometres.
