Oct 20, 2009, 13:53 GMT
Buenos Aires - At least eight people died and six others were injured Monday when a police pick-up truck crashed into a bus in the central Buenos Aires neighbourhood of San Cristobal.
The dead - two police officers and six members of a family of Peruvian immigrants - were all travelling in the police vehicle, Argentine media reported.
According to media reports, police were taking an 83-year-old woman in a wheelchair to hospital for an emergency, after she complained of heart problems and waited in vain for an ambulance.
Some relatives of the elderly woman - four of her adult children and two grandchildren - were also travelling in the police vehicle. Only one person - a daughter of the sick woman - survived the accident, although she suffered serious injuries and remained in hospital.
The police truck was reportedly moving at high speed with its siren on, without regard for red lights. In the early hours of Monday it crashed into a bus and both vehicles went onto the pavement.
Several people who had been travelling in the bus also suffered injuries.
