US announces mass crackdown on Mexican drug cartel
Oct 22, 2009, 15:56 GMT
Washington - The United States has arrested hundreds of people in connection to a crackdown on a major Mexican drug cartel and seized more than 11 tons of narcotics, officials announced Thursday.
In the past two days, 303 people were arrested in 19 states as part of 'Project Coronado' launched against the La Familia cartel, one of Mexico's newest and regarded among its most violent.
'The cartels should know that we here in the United States are not going to allow them to operate unfettered,' said Attorney General Eric Holder, the top US law enforcement officer.
Since the crackdown began nearly four years ago, 1,186 individuals have been arrested while tons methamphetamines, cocaine and marijuana have been seized. Authorities have captured more than 32 million dollars in drug money and 400 weapons that were likely headed across the border to Mexico, Holder said.
