Bolivia's Morales has traditional rite before formal inauguration
Jan 21, 2010, 18:34 GMT
La Paz - Bolivian President Evo Morales took part in a traditional Andean ceremony Thursday in the Tiwanaku citadel, ahead of his formal inauguration for a further five-term in office Friday.
The ceremony at the Andean archeological site of Tiwanaku, about 70 kilometres west of La Paz and at an altitude of 3,800 metres, sought to give positive energy to the left-wing populist Morales, the first president of indigenous descent in Bolivia's history.
An Aymara priest officiated at the rituals, along with around 20 authorities of indigenous communities, known as 'Mallkus.'
Dressed in a white tunic with traditional motifs symbolizing prosperity, wisdom and success, Morales addressed thousands of supporters and made offerings to 'Mother' Earth.
