Lima - A earthquake measuring 5.8 on the Richter scale caused thousands of people to run into the streets in northern Peru Monday evening.

The January 12 earthquake that destroyed the Haitian capital Port- au-Prince and killed at least 112,000 people measured 7.0 on the Richter scale.
