UN: Funding for Haiti aid "stagnated"
Mar 12, 2010, 12:28 GMT
Geneva - Incoming donations for the United Nations' aid and recovery operations in Haiti have slowed to a trickle, a spokeswoman said Friday.
'The contributions have stagnated,' said Elizabeth Byrs, spokeswoman for the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs in Geneva.
She said levels of funding for the 1.4 billion-dollar aid package remained almost identical to the amounts donated two weeks ago.
The initial 570 million dollars requested by the UN was almost immediately funded. However, the larger amount, which includes more long term development, has had trouble attracting sufficient donations and the total package remained 49 per cent funded.
Even prior to the January quake, Haiti was considered the least developed country in the western hemisphere.
