Earthquake rattles Cuba, no damage reported
Mar 21, 2010, 16:25 GMT
Washington - A 5.6-magnitude earthquake shook Cuba on Saturday, the US Geological Survey said.
The earthquake struck at 1:08 pm at a depth of 22 kilometres. Its epicentre was 44 kilometres south-southwest of Guantanamo, the location of a US military base with a prison housing terrorism suspects after the September 11, 2001, attacks.
'So far, there haven't been any reports of major damages or injuries,' a civil defence official in Havana told CNN. 'It's still early.'
There were no immediate reports of casualties or damage in Santiago de Cuba, which is about 57 kilometres from the epicentre.
A woman who runs a bed and breakfast there told CNN, 'It was very strong. We ran and stood in the doorway. Neighbours were screaming and ran into the street ... I haven't heard of any damages. Everybody is back inside.'
