Released Cuba dissident travels to US
Jul 28, 2010, 23:47 GMT
Havana - One of more than 50 Cuban dissidents that the communist island has agreed to free left Wednesday for the United States.
Ariel Sigler, who is confined to a wheelchair, will seek medical treatment in Miami.
He was among 75 dissidents arrested in 2003 and sentenced to long jail terms in what became know as 'black spring.' The Cuban government claimed they were 'mercenaries' working in the interest of foreign nations, such as the United States, and sentenced them to up to 28 years in prison.
Cuba agreed to release 52 of the dissidents, and Sigler was among those freed June 12.
The Catholic Church and Spanish government lobbied for the prisoners' release, and so far 20 have sought asylum in Spain.
