Thousands of inmates join hunger strike in Venezuela
Sep 4, 2010, 16:16 GMT
Caracas/Sao Paolo - More than 4,000 prison inmates have gone on hunger strike in Venezuela to protest what they say are poor detention conditions, local media reported Saturday.
The inmates allege that guards mistreat them, prisons are overcrowded and trial proceedings take too long.
The open-ended hunger strike began mid-week, the reports said. Prisons in the states of Bolivar, Aragua and Carabobo are affected.
In a letter to President Hugo Chavez, some inmates described the prisons as 'terror camps.'
They warned that their protest would be ratcheted up if the situation does not change.
