Two dead, 20 injured in Buenos Aires nightclub collapse
Sep 10, 2010, 17:52 GMT
Buenos Aires - Two people died and at least 20 were injured early Friday when the mezzanine level of a Buenos Aires nightclub collapsed.
The two women who died at the Beara nightclub in the Palermo neighbourhood were aged 20 and 21, police and rescue teams said. The injured were being treated in hospital, but none of them had life- threatening wounds.
A live concert had just ended when the mezzanine collapsed, trapping those below.
'Among the strongest of us, we lifted the fallen ceiling so that the people who had been crushed could get out,' said Sergio Aranda, keyboard player for the band Rafaga, who had just performed and had stayed at the club.
Buenos Aires city officials said the nightclub was operating legally and had undergone various inspections. A probe was launched into the causes of the collapse. Author: Ignacio Pereyra
