Chilean former president Bachelet to head UN Women organization
Sep 14, 2010, 16:04 GMT
New York - Chilean former president Michelle Bachelet was appointed Tuesday to head UN Women, a new organization created to intensify efforts aimed at meeting the needs of women and girls worldwide.
Bachelet was named by UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon, who said the process of selection had been transparent and fair.
UN Women was established by the UN General Assembly earlier this year in an effort to refocus attention on filling the gaps on programmes dealing with women and girls. The new organization will pull together all existing UN programmes related to women and girls.
