Tropical storm Matthew lashes Nicaragua, Honduras
Sep 25, 2010, 14:40 GMT
Managua - Tropical storm Matthew lashed the north of Nicaragua and neighbouring Honduras with heavy rain Friday, forcing the evacuation of thousands of residents east of Puerto Cabezas.
The US Hurricane Center in Miami, Florida, said the Atlantic storm made landfall at the Caribbean coast of Nicaragua.
After hitting land, Matthew weakened somewhat to 85 kph winds, and was expected to move across Honduras and into Belize and Guatemala by Saturday night and Sunday.
Heavy rainfall up to 25 to 40 cm over the next several days 'could produce life-threatening flash floods and mud slides,' the hurricane center warned.
While Matthew never reached hurricane strength, another storm - Lisa - became the season's seventh hurricane as it moved more than 600 km north-west of the Cape Verde Islands off the coast of West Africa. It was not near enough land to pose a threat to human populations, the hurricane centre said.
