Hurricane Paula veers north, set to avoid Mexico
Oct 13, 2010, 5:50 GMT
Mexico City - Hurricane Paula changed course late Tuesday, turning away from Mexico's Yucatan Peninsula and heading north towards Cuba, the National Hurricane Center in Miami said.
The category-two hurricane on the five-level Saffir-Simpson scale was earlier heading towards the area around the holiday resort of Cancun, where it was feared its sustained winds of up to 160 kilometres per hour and heavy rains would cause damage.
As a precaution, the hurricane warning in the region was not lifted, but the hurricane centre said the storm no longer posed an immediate threat to the Mexican coast.
The storm was predicted to strengthen as it moved past the peninsula and towards the western point of Cuba during the night.
