World Bank approves 30 million dollars for homes in Haiti
Oct 27, 2010, 1:13 GMT
Washington - The World Bank on Tuesday approved 30 million dollars to support Haiti's efforts to rebuild after the devastating earthquake at year's begin.
In addition to killing more than 220,000 people, the January quake left 1.5 million people still living in makeshift camps.
The World Bank said its programme will target about 140,000 people in the capital Port au Prince, which was the epicentre of the catastrophic magnitude 8 quake, and in hard-hit nearby Delmas.
'Moving people out of camps and creating the conditions for their safe return to the original neighborhoods is one of the most pressing needs and is also key for improving their life condition and security situation,' said Ronald Baudin, Haitis Minister of Economy and Finance, in a statement issued by the World Bank.
Some of the money will help owners and residents repair their homes as long as they are considered structurally solid.
