Mayor-elect killed in eastern Mexico
Nov 9, 2010, 16:17 GMT
Mexico City - The mayor-elect of the town of Juan Rodriguez Clara in the eastern Mexican state of Veracruz was found dead along with two other people, authorities said Tuesday.
Gregorio Barradas Miravete, who belonged to the National Action Party (PAN) of Mexican President Felipe Calderon, and his two companions were found dead late Monday in the neighbouring state of Oaxaca. They had been kidnapped hours earlier, said Veracruz Attorney General Salvador Mikel Rivera.
One of the dead was Barradas Miravete's deputy in Juan Rodriguez Clara, which is around 480 kilometres east of Mexico City.
The three men were found in the mayor-elect's vehicle.
Barradas Miravete, who was active in the area as a farmer, had previously been a federal legislator. He was elected mayor on July 4.
Veracruz authorities say they have no reason to suspect that the triple murder may be a vendetta.
At least 12 mayors have been killed in Mexico so far this year, according to independent organizations.
More than 10,000 people have been killed in Mexico so far this year in incidents linked to organized crime, according to the count of the daily Reforma.
