Gunmen attack Acapulco daily El Sur
Nov 11, 2010, 17:59 GMT
Mexico City - Armed attackers fired shots against the building that houses the Acapulco daily El Sur, authorities in the southern Mexican state of Guerrero said Thursday.
The attack took place late Wednesday, at a time when 12 people were working in the building in central Acapulco, the state Public Security Ministry said.
Attackers arrived in two SUVs and shot at the facade of the building.
'Several of them shot their way into the newsroom, where they poured a pot of petrol, as if trying to cause a fire,' El Sur said Thursday.
Editors, style proof readers, designers and advertising personnel, among others, were in the building at the time.
'When the shooting started they sought refuge away from the newsroom and they were not hit by the bullets, which hit walls, roofs, windows and desks,' El Sur said.
This is the most recent of several attacks on media or on reporters this year. They are generally blamed on organized crime gangs. Most of the cases remain unsolved.
According to the New York-based Committee for the Protection of Journalists (CPJ), at least 10 Mexican reporters have been killed so far this year.
