Dec 20, 2010, 18:12 GMT
Mexico City - Former Mexican presidential candidate Diego Fernandez de Cevallos was released Monday after more than seven months in captivity.
His release was confirmed by officials of the National Action Party (PAN), to which both Fernandez de Cevallos and Mexican President Felipe Calderon belong.
Fernandez de Cevallos, 69, a prominent attorney, was kidnapped on May 14. His captors announced his release over the weekend.
'He has fortunately been released. Reliable sources tell us that it is a reality, we hope his health is good,' said PAN Senator Felipe Gonzalez Gonzalez, president of the Senate's Public Security Commission.
'He is already with his family,' Gonzalez Gonzalez added.
The politician, nicknamed Chief Diego, was abducted near his ranch in Pedro Escobedo in the central state of Queretaro. His car, with bloodstains, was found abandoned at the ranch, officials said.
Fernandez de Cevallos, a controversial attorney often accused of influence peddling to favour his clients, is a close ally of Interior Minister Fernando Gomez Mont.
