Mexico investigates alleged mass kidnapping of migrants
Dec 22, 2010, 19:47 GMT
Mexico City - Mexican police were investigating an alleged mass kidnapping of migrants, the interior minister said Wednesday.
Central Americans who try and cross Mexico to illegally enter the United States often become victims of criminal gangs. In August, 72 mainly Central American migrants were massacred in the northern Mexican state of Tamaulipas allegedly for refusing to work as killers for a gang.
On Wednesday, three migrants were testifying before the public prosecutor to establish whether scores of Central Americans were kidnapped on December 16 in southern Mexico.
Mexican authorities found 92 illegal migrants during a raid on a freight train last week in Chahuites, Oaxaca, the Interior Ministry said. They were deported to their native countries.
According to some of the migrants, nearly 100 others were later kidnapped at gunpoint from the same train by masked attackers.
On Tuesday, Mexico's National Migration Institute said it had no evidence that any migrants had been kidnapped in Chahuites.
El Salvador and Honduras have demanded an investigation of these events.
