Thirteen killed in attack on Mexico drug rehab centre
Jun 8, 2011, 16:51 GMT
Mexico City - Thirteen people were killed in an attack on a drug and alcohol rehabilitation centre in the Mexican city of Torreon, local authorities reported Wednesday.
In the Tuesday attack at the La Victoria rehab centre, two attackers arrived at the site, opened fire and then escaped.
'Eleven people died at the site, while two others were injured,' the public prosecutor's office said in a statement. The two who were injured later succumbed to their wounds. All the victims were aged between 25-33.
The motive for the attack was unknown, although it is similar to others in cities like Chihuahua and Ciudad Juarez, which the authorities blamed on vendettas between drug-trafficking gangs.
Torreon, in the state of Coahuila, is about 1,000 kilometres north of Mexico City.
More than 40,000 people have died in Mexico since December 2006 in incidents linked to organized crime.
