Haitian election for prime minister again unsuccessful
Aug 3, 2011, 14:38 GMT
Port-au-Prince - Haiti's President Michel Martelly has again failed to get his candidate for prime minister successfully through the Senate, local media reported Wednesday.
With a vote of 16 out of 30 against, the candidacy of Bernard Gousse was rejected by the Haitian senate. Thirteen of the remaining 14 senators abstained from the vote, which leaves the poorest state in the Americas without a functioning government.
Martelly made no statement to the press after the vote, leaving political circles in the capital clueless as to his (and the country's) next moves.
Although former entertainer Martelly won the May 14 election with a clear majority, the previous ruling Inite party still dominates both houses of Congress and can therefore determine who the prime minister will be.
The new government will be tasked above all with the rebuilding of the country using the several billion dollars of aid promised by the international community following the catastrophic earthquake of January 2010.
