Chavez starting second stage of chemotherapy
Aug 3, 2011, 18:36 GMT
Caracas - Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez is starting the second stage of chemotherapy to treat cancer shortly, he told reporters Wednesday.
'In the next few hours, I have to go into a second stage of chemotherapy,' Chavez said.
He underwent surgery twice in June in Cuba. The first procedure was to treat an abdominal abscess, while the second aimed to remove a tumour in the same area.
Later, he started chemotherapy, shaving his head due to the side effects.
Chavez said he is being treated by a Cuban-Venezuelan medical team, but he did not specify where he would be undergoing the next stage of chemotherapy.
He denied reports that he was suffering from colorectal cancer or liver cancer but gave no further details.
'The enemy is hunting for anything I may say to make things up and try to generate anxiety,' Chavez said.
He said recent tests had shown an increase in his red blood-cell count.
'There are risks that some (cancer) cells of this sort may reappear, everybody knows that,' he said.
Chavez, who has led Venezuela since 1999, repeated that he will be a candidate for re-election in 2012.
