Truck accident kills at least 5 children in Mexican daycare centre
Aug 9, 2011, 23:21 GMT
Mexico City - At least five children were killed Tuesday when a cement-carrying truck destroyed their daycare centre in Arramberri, in the northern Mexican state of Nuevo Leon, authorities said.
Civil protection officials did not rule out a higher death toll. Arramberri Mayor Rafael Flores said at least one person remained trapped in the rubble.
'The truck, carrying 40 tonnes of cement, went right through the two rooms in which the daycare operated by the Nuevo Leon Social Development Ministry was active,' Flores said.
The accident happened around noon (1700 GMT). The truck was apparently speeding, and its brakes failed, Flores said.
Three rescue helicopters were deployed in the area.
