Mexican police officers "sell" migrant to lynchers for 40 dollars
Aug 17, 2011, 15:26 GMT
Mexico City - A Guatemalan migrant who was killed earlier this month had been handed over to his alleged lynchers by police officers for about 40 dollars, the Mexican daily Reforma reported Wednesday.
The Guatemalan, aged 19, was killed near a migrants' shelter in central Mexico. He was beaten up and stoned, allegedly by young Mexicans who asked for police assistance after being mugged in Tultitlan, in the state of Mexico adjoining the capital.
Police arrested the migrant as a suspect, but instead of running a regular investigation opted to 'sell' him to the young people who lynched him, Reforma reported, citing Hugo Montoya, a priest who works with migrants in Tultitlan.
The Guatemalan had apparently been en route to Boston, where an acquaintance had promised to help him find a job.
Mexico's National Commission of Human Rights has launched an investigation on the matter.
