Chavez says cancer is gone, chemo is only preventive
Aug 30, 2011, 17:42 GMT
Caracas - Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez said the cancer he suffered is gone and that he is only undergoing chemotherapy so 'it never again returns.'
'That went away,' he told Venezuelan television late Monday from where he is recovering in Caracas.
'With the favour of God, the Virgin's cloak, the saints, the spirits of the savanna and the spirit of Maisanta (his grandfather) and the love of the people, that cancer will never again return,' Chavez said.
He was admitted into the Military Hospital in Caracas Saturday for a third round of chemotherapy, which is set to end Thursday.
Chavez, 57, underwent surgery in Cuba on June 20, to remove a tumour. He then underwent two rounds of chemotherapy in Havana.
However, he has appeared confident that he will recover from the disease and be strong enough to run for re-election next year, in a bid for a 2013-19 term.
