Hurricane Rina targets Mexico's Yucatan resorts
Oct 25, 2011, 20:26 GMT
Mexico City - Tropical storm Rina powered up to hurricane speed Tuesday as it headed toward the Mexican east coast resort cities of Cozumel and Cancun, carrying wind blasts of 160 km per hour.
The National Hurricane Centre in Miami, Florida, said Rina was a category 2 hurricane on the Saffir Simpson scale. It warned of hurricane conditions on Mexico's Yucatan coast by early Thursday.
Tropical storm conditions were expected on the coast by Wednesday afternoon, which would make 'outside preparations difficult or dangerous,' the center said.
By Tuesday afternoon, Rina was about 450 km east-south-east of Chetumal, Mexico.
