Mexico braces for hurricane Rina; storm has slightly weakened
Oct 26, 2011, 20:03 GMT
Mexico City - Officials on Mexico's Yucatan peninsula Wednesday closed schools and deployed troops to move residents to safety ahead of hurricane Rina, which has weakened to a category 1 storm but was still bearing a 145-km-hr punch.
Roberto Borge, governor of Quintana Roo state, oversaw preparations as the storm barrelled across the Caribbean.
The National Hurricane Centre in Miami, Florida also issued a tropical storm watch for the coast of Belize northward from Belize City and for the Honduran Bay islands of Roatan and Guanaja. It advised western Cuba to closely monitor Rina's path.
Rina, which has been downgraded from category 2 on the Saffir-Simpson scale, was expected to lash the Yucatan coast by Thursday. On Wednesday, tourists in Cancun made use of spectacular weather for a day at the beach before the storm hits.
Rina is the 18th named storm of the Atlantic hurricane season, which officially ends on November 30.
