Over 15 million dollars belonging to drug lord seized in Mexico
Nov 22, 2011, 17:14 GMT
Mexico City - The Mexican Army said Tuesday that 15.3 million dollars seized in Tijuana belonged to the drug lord Joaquin Guzman Loera, also known as 'El Chapo,' one of the leaders of the Sinaloa cartel.
The money, which was shown to reporters in Mexico City, is the second-largest such confiscation in dollars since Mexican President Felipe Calderon took office in December 2006. The largest take amounted to 26.2 million dollars, found in Sinaloa in September 2008.
National Security Spokesman Ricardo Trevilla said the army found the cash Friday in a van in the Cumbres de Juarez neighbourhood of Tijuana, across the border from the US city of San Diego.
Three parcels of cocaine were also found in the vehicle, along with weapons and jewels. The authorities did not mention any arrests.
At least 45,000 people have died in Mexico since December 2006 in incidents linked to organized crime.
