Peruvian cabinet chief resigns
Dec 12, 2011, 7:40 GMT
Lima - The head of Peru's cabinet, Salomon Lerner Ghitis, resigned unexpectedly Saturday, and President Ollanta Humala named Interior Minister Oscar Valdes to replace Ghitis as head of ministers.
No officials reason for the resignation was given, but there was speculation that it could have been due to political differences within the cabinet.
Lerner Ghitis, a 65-year-old engineer and millionaire, had earned the trust from both the left and the right since Humala's inauguration in July. His successor Valdes, who like Humala is a retired military colonel, is seen as a close ally of the president.
