Mexican Army kills 11 suspects in clash
Dec 12, 2011, 16:43 GMT
Mexico City - Eleven alleged members of a criminal gang died in a clash with the Mexican Army in the northern state of Tamaulipas, Mexico's National Defence Ministry said Monday.
A soldier was also injured in the clash, which happened Saturday during a 'land reconnaissance' effort in the municipality of Valle Hermoso, part of ongoing operations to fight organized crime in the area.
The authorities said a group of people barricaded themselves inside a house when they saw the soldiers. They opened fire from within the house, which led to a shootout as the army fought back, the National Defence Ministry said in a statement. Two suspects were arrested.
More than 45,000 people have been killed in Mexico over the past five years in incidents linked to organized crime.
